Are you ready to kick your home’s audiovisual capabilities up a notch? In the age of streaming services and handheld devices that allow us to carry our entertainment around in our pockets, we’ve become spoiled to having the audio and visual experiences we want anywhere, any time. Why not bring that kind of flexibility into your home? With today’s technology, you can have high-quality sound and picture anywhere in your home, and even outdoors. Ready to get started?

  • Decide exactly what you want from your audio-visual system. How many rooms or zones should be included in your whole home system? Do you want separate systems, or should everything be connected to one central system? What connections are available on your equipment already? Is this a do it yourself project or should you call in the professionals? Do you have everything you need, or do you need to pick up some more components before you get too deep into this job?
  • How many audio sources do you need? Your audio input comes from many sources: cable television, streaming media devices, blu-ray or DVD players, turntables or CD players, streaming music services, an AM/FM tuner, or satellite radio. You should decide which of these will be included in your system and decide whether you want a single source or multi-source system. If your intention is to have the same music playing in every room of the house, that’s single On the other hand, if you want to be able to watch television while someone else is listening to music, you’ll want a multi-source system.
  • Should your system be wired, wireless, or a hybrid of both? Wireless speakers and equipment offer greater flexibility, especially if you’ll be moving speakers or rearranging your furniture. If you don’t need that much flexibility, though, a wired system may still work for you. The benefit of wired audio is that it has a more dependable and consistent quality of sound, as compared to wireless. Remember, even with a wired system, you can use wireless control.
  • Is your computer network wired for multiple zones? If you’ve got a computer network wired with CAT-5 cables, you can use it to distribute line-level signals to different parts of your house. In some cases, this can save time and effort connecting speakers, so it’s something to consider. One caveat: you won’t be able to use your CAT-5 network for computer networking and audio at the same time.
  • How do you like your speakers? If interior design is important to you, choose your speakers carefully. Floor standing speakers can be disruptive to a room’s aesthetic appeal and can take up valuable floor space. Bookshelf speakers are a little less conspicuous, but still, commandeer valuable real estate, and positioning the speaker wire can be tricky. If you want speakers that virtually disappear, you might want to put in the extra effort and go for in-wall or in-ceiling speakers.
